New President at the helm of BIA NSW

Alan Blake of Blakes Marine was last week nominated into the position of President of the Boating Industry Association of NSW (BIA). Alan takes over from Darren Vaux who has stepped down to concentrate on national issues.

Alan brings to the position a wealth of industry knowledge and board experience having joined the BIA board in 2004, serving the last five years as Treasurer.

On reflecting on his term as President, Darren said 'It has been challenging and rewarding representing a diverse and professional Association that has become the strongest Association in our industry with the most capable and stable management and staff team and Board of Directors'.

Darren will remain on the Board ex-officio as Immediate Past-President for twelve months and continue his involvement and advocacy on key issues at a state and federal government level into the future. His continuing involvement will include being Chairman of our national body, the Boating Industries Alliance of Australia, Chairman of the Maritime Advisory Council in NSW and Vice - President of the Marina Industries Association.

The AGM saw two new faces join the board. Lyndon Turner of Nautilus Marine Insurance joins as Treasurer and Shannon Stocks of Shannon Outboard Service as committee chairman of the Marine Industry Mechanical Repairers Association.

The 2013/2014 Board is:

Michael Jarvin (Advanced Marina Management) – Representing the Brokers Division

Terry Wise (Pacific Sailing School) – Representing the Sailing Division

President Alan Blake said that he was grateful for Darren’s leadership over the last couple of years and thanked him for his time and efforts.

'We have a strong board and as an Association we are well equipped to take on the challenges that our industry will face in the coming years. We have excellent programs and a show that will require nurturing and I have no doubt that the board and BIA team will do a good job for the benefit of all of our members.'

Malcolm Page OAM, two-time Olympic Gold Medallist, became the Chief of Olympic Sailing for the USA on January 1 Malcolm Page OAM, two-time Olympic Gold Medallist (470) with Nathan Wilmot in 2008 and Mat Belcher in 2012, became the Chief of Olympic Sailing for the USA on January 1 this year. In and of itself it is hardly the freshest news, and well and truly yesterday’s fish wrapper. It was also a wise choice on behalf of Team USA, for he has succeeded in both the physical and commercial arms of our sport.
