Napier Sailing Club stage prelude to Laser Nationals

Edmund Tam runner up at the 2011 Radial Apprentice Masters Worlds, San Francisco SW
The Laser North Island Championship was sailed at the Napier Sailing Club with the Club's Summer Regatta.

The regatta is a prelude to the Laser National Championships which will be organized by the Napier Sailing Club and sailed in Hawke Bay from the 16th to the 20th January 2013.

The Laser fleet had a dedicated triangle windward leeward course in open water with Clive Snow as the Officer of the Day. A total of thirty-six Lasers sailed in two divisions, Radial and Standard rig. The weather was perfect, Hawke's Bay at its best, sunny with consistent sea breezes, light at first strengthening up to about fourteen knots in the afternoon.

This was just enough to provoke a couple of capsizes. The fleets completed four races on the first day and three races on the second day.

Edmund Tam from Worser Bay, a World Laser Apprentice Masters veteran, was first in the radial fleet and Andrew Dellabarca, also from Worser Bay, was first in the Standard rig. Michael Cressey was the best of the Napier Sailing Club contestants coming in third in the Laser Radial fleet. He will be aged seventeen according to the Laser Class rules at the time of the Nationals and will be a strong contender in the under nineteen Radial Youth section.

The Napier Sailing Club looks forward to hosting the Laser Nationals in January with between one hundred and one hundred and forty sailors expected to compete. Contest details can be found on the N.Z.L.A. web site, www.nzlaser.org and the contest web site, www.napierlasersailing.com.
