NZL Sailing Team: Women finish seventh in matchracing at World Cup

'NZL Sailing Team'    Yachting NZ

The New Zealand Match Race Team finished seventh after making the quarter finals at Miami OCR - ISAF World Cup.

Day 5 bought plenty of excitement for the spectators. The air was cold, the breeze was up and so was the chop.

Quarter Finals:
NZL raced GBR to a 'first to three points' series. The series went to GBR 3-1.
Race One was the highlight of the series; racing was even with plenty of manoeuvres and lead changes; the umpires kept the game interesting by awarding no penalties despite many incidents. The race went to GBR.

Race Two was an clear win to the Kiwis and Race Three was similar for the British.

In Race Four, Koru Match made it difficult for themselves to get involved in the game.

Again NZL struggled to put the pressure on which lead to a loss.

NZL vs AUSTRALIA
It is races like this one, that reminds you that you should never give up!

Australia had a significant lead by the first windward mark. The NZL team searched for small gains; from each wave, gybe, tack and shift. By the 2nd windward mark, NZL rounded 1 boat length ahead.

Both teams fought hard in the final run and NZL was able to hold their lead to the finish.

Miami has been a great start to 2011 for Koru Match.

This is a stepping stone for a significant campaign in Europe prior to the Pre-Olympics in August 2011.

The team is satisfied with their performance and look forward to further developing 'lessons learned.'

Next up for the team is the Musto Women's Wellington Match Cup at the end of February, which is one of the 'NZL trials' for Women's Olympic Match Racing.

Koru Match comprises: Stephanie Hazard (Helm), Susannah Pyatt (Bow) and Jenna Hansen (Trimmer)
