The New Zealand Hartley 16 National Championship 2013, sailed in New Plymouth, finished in light to moderate sailing conditions.

After three races, Alan Holdt and Roger Fawcett onboard Tight Fit collected just enough points to clinch the title, beating Simon Holdt and Nathan McArthur (Stratos) and defending champ Gareth and Mike Insley (Pronto).

New Plymouth certainly through some tough conditions at the 23 competing boats, and crews were relived to see lighter winds greeting them on the last day.

The class uses the 'one design handicap system' for the handicap result with local crew Guy and David Ormrod in Splash taking first place.

The off water socialising as always, was well attended, with Judge Snowflake presiding over the very entertaining daily court session, with the proceeds going to the newly formed Sailability Taranaki. Thanks goes to Sponsors Black Heart, Carlsberg, Wild Buck, NZCT, Doyle Sails, IED Lifting Centre, TSB Bank, Taranaki Providers, and a big thanks to Joseph Wright, and race officer Jamie Sutherland.

The 48th Hartley 16 National Champs 2014 will be held in Manukau, and with the class doing a publicity drive over the next 12 months with the aim of increasing numbers it could be the biggest nationals yet.
