On Saturday second and Sunday October 3rd 2010 the Gosford Sailing Club will host the New South Wales J24 State Championship on behalf of the NSW J24 Association and on Monday October 4th the inaugural J24 Legends Regatta.

While the J24 Association has been coming to Gosford for over fifteen years to conduct a regatta over the long weekend this will be the first occasion on which the NSW State Titles has been ran at Gosford Sailing Club. Current indications are that there will 27 J24 yachts competing at the regatta with five yachts coming from Victoria, two from South Australia, and an owner coming from New Zealand for the event, as well as a past National Champion from Queensland borrowing a NSW based J24. In total 135 people will be competing on Saturday and Sunday with a further 25 sailing legends attending on the Monday.

The Association has also taken the opportunity to recognize the many J24 Legends who have competed in J24 yachts over the past 30 years and have invited past National and State Champions to helm a J24 yacht in two races to be conducted on Monday October 4th. Those accepting the invitation include former Olympians and Legends who have gone on to become World and National Champions in both the J24 and other yachting classes.

Specifically, Mark Bethwaite will be attending, a definite J24 Legend who was J24 National Champion 1982 and the J24 World Champion in 1982. Mark has been a member of the Australian Olympic Sailing Team at three Olympics. He competed at Munich in 1972, Montreal in 1976 in Moths, LW Sharpies & FD's and Moscow in 1980 in Solings. He was also a World Champion in the Soling Class in 1982, for which he was named Australian Yachtsman of the Year. In 2000 he won the World Masters Championships in the Laser Class in Mexico.

Also attending is Sean Kirkjian who was the J24 National Champion in 2004, 2005 & 2007, NSW State Champion 4 times, VIC State Champion 3 times and the winner twice of the SA State Championships. Sean's sailing background began on Lasers where he won 3 Australian Championships in the early 90's, along with a string of State victories. Sean's achievements include competing in 15 Sydney to Hobart's, including to date being the youngest ever skipper, 20 Sydney to Southport's, and a string of other coastal events.

All other invited Legends have a host of trophies to their name and we expect there to be some close racing in the Legends Regatta.

We have recently adopted the Logo J24 Where Legends Begin in recognition of the many former competitors who have gone on to achieve distinction in other yachting endeavours.

The two races on the Monday will be dedicated to two former J24 Legends who passed away and who were both State and National Champions. The first race will honour Ian Bashford who also built the J24 yachts in the late 1980s and early 1990s, while the second race will honour Andrew Short who was well known in the boating industry and died while racing in the Flinders Island Yacht race last year.

In addition to the racing, there will also be a dinner held in the Ball Room of the Crowne Plaza Terrigal on the Sunday night where trophies for the State Titles will be presented, and the legends who will be sailing on Monday will be introduced. The Master of Ceremonies is ex J24 sailor Rob Mundle, The first J24 State Title winner, Journalist, TV Sailing Commentator, author of the book about the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race 'Fatal Storm' and Commodore of Southport Yacht Club. Rob also introduced the J24 yacht into Australia.

Also presented each time this year is the NSW J24 Women on Water Cup, not presented for any particular race or regatta win, but for dedication and involvement in the class, last year won for the first time by a Victorian, Lisa Simonov. To win the trophy she had competed in State titles, National and World Tiles and contributed much to club racing, including being a part owner of two J24s. This is a very important trophy in the promotion of the J24 class to women and will be keenly won this year by a new recipient.
