Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach Race Week 2010. More divisional news and results from day 5 of this great regatta.
120 boats, 1000 plus sailors, 8-16 knots of breeze, 74 Islands and we dont know how many pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants.
The Multihulls were enjoying a great battle out on the water today and in Race 5, Moving Finger, after another fast start from mid-line, took the handicap win from Sirocco, with Wild Thing third. Cynophobe took line honours once more.
After five races, Whitsunday local skipper Bob Thomson leads on Sirocco, two points clear of Moving Finger. Intriigue (yes that iis how iits spelt) is third, one point ahead of Wild Thing.
Race 6 for the Performance Racing Division was won on handicap by Airlie Beach local and environment campaigner Ian Thompson on SOS Ocean Racing, the downhill flyer on which he recently smashed the solo round Australia record.
Damian Suckling on his yellow boat Another Fiasco was second, with fellow Whitsunday sailor Charles Wallis and his Reignition crew filling third place. Line honours went to Terry Archer’s Sydney 40 Questionable Logic.
The Overall series leader after six races is Questionable Logic, just half a point ahead of Another Fiasco. Idle Time, the beloved boat of Whitsunday Sailing Club Commodore Kevin Fogarty, is third.
In the Cruising Class, Division 1 Noel Gough’s eXcapade scored the handicap win over Blue Moon (Phil Bedlington), with former Brindabella owner George Snow’s Argo Blue, third. Consistent line honours winner Don Algie's Storm 2, scored again.
The overall leader after five races is Lets Go, Alyn and Danielle Ovenden’s Adams 15. She is three points clear of Blue Moon, with Chris Stockdale’s Kat, third.
In Cruising Class Division 2, Spike, the Bavaria 44 of Gerard Young, took the handicap win from Richard Nichols’ Seduction. John Galloway’s Queensland Marine Services was third. Line honours went to Queensland Marine Services.
Overall series leader after five races is Peggy, Benjamin Meakin’s Austral Clubman 8. Amadeus (Peter Johnson) and Queensland Marine Services (John Galloway) are tied on points, with Amadeus second by way of a count back.
In the Ross 780 One Design class, Race 6 went to Rolls Ross (Rod Caldwell), from Wicked (Derek Foley) and Fly ‘N High (Gary Bruce).
Race 7 went to Wicked from High Tide (Shannan Hart) with Rolls Ross (Rod Caldwell) third.
After seven races, with one drop, the One Design leader is High Tide from Rolls Ross, with Wicked currently third. Its close racing but the skippers and crew are really enjoying the camaraderie, having quiet little drinks across the boats in the small cockpits each afternoon.
The Ross 780s are also being scored under the EHC system. Using that method Race 6 went to Rossgo (Jon Griffin) from Rolls Ross (Rod Caldwell) with Cunning Plan (Andrew Milne) third. Rolls Ross took line honours.
Race 7 went to Le Rossignol skippered by Peter McKenzie, from Wicked with Cunning Plan third. Line honours went to Wicked, who was just under a minute ahead of High Tide.
This is the best result so far for the Lismore sailor, McKenzie who swears his Little Swallow is nervous with all the big boys around her.
Overall series leader is Jon Griffin’s Rossgo with a current drop of seventh place. High Tide is one point back in second place, courtesy of a count back. Wicked is third.
Cruising Non Spinnaker Race 5 handicap winner was Riff Raff, the Beneteau Oceanis 440 skippered by Dan White, from the Whitsunday Sailing Club. Rumrunner LL, Chris Cole, also from the Whitsunday Sailing Club was second. Sundowner skippered by local sailor Norm House, completed the Whitsunday trifecta. Rumrunner LL took line honours.
The current Overall series leader is Rumrunner LL, from Sundowner and Still Dangerous (Ivor Burgess), who are tied on 22 points a piece.
