In Act 4 of the Melges 24 Volvo Cup, organised by Fraglia Vela Riva from the 4th-7th July, ten races were held across four days of competition under sunny skies and good winds. 36 skiffs took part with around 200 competitors representing 13 countries.

A good win for the Blue Moon with Franco Rossini and Flavio Favini at the helm. Blue Moon took the lead on the second day and finished with a10 point lead over Altea the craft of Andrea Racchelli, who in the last two days notched up five thirds overall. In fact on the second last day of competition, Altea overtook the reigning Italian champion Matteo Balestrero on Giogi. Great work from helmsman Andre Racchelli who took a solid second place seven points ahead of the skiff Giogi with Nico Celon among the crew and who finished third. In the Corinthians, the non-professional crews, Enjoy 3 of Carlo Tomellieri and Ivan Venturi of Verona took an excellent ninth place overall. They placed a good fourth partial in the last race. There was a good comeback for Strambapapà of Ruggero Conte second Corinthian and 10th overall out of 36 taking part. Third in the non-professional category was Maitec of Claudio Ceredini with Andrea Parra. Today's last race was won by Aez with Markus Wieser of Germany.

After the wonderful races of the magnificent Melges 24, Fraglia Vela Riva turns its attention fully to the World Optimist Championships which is almost upon us. From the 12th -13th July the 'Pre- Worlds' will take place. The official opening ceremony is scheduled for the evening of the 16th July with the first races taking place the day after. Meanwhile at Riva del Garda the first delegations have already arrived. New Zealand, Singapore and Brazil were the first nations to register. A record participation of 59 nations is expected with some uncertainty whether China and Angola will be here due to visa regulations. The Melges therefore leave the way for the fiesty youngsters who will be arriving from all over the world at Riva del Garda.
