On day three of competition at the 2012 Audi Melges 20 Gold Cup in Napoli, in spite of the light air conditions, two more races were completed. With a sixth race now being completed, a game changing discard came into play resulting in some great changes in the top ranking.

Overnight leader Achille Onorato aboard Mascalzone Latino Jr. with team mates Lorenzo Bressani and Federico Michetti slid backwards in the standings to finish the day in seventh, while Dario Levi’s Fremito D’Arja with tactician Andrea Casale catapulted into the lead.

Levi will have to pay close attention to the attacks of Enrico Pegoraro on Karma and Luca Domenici’s Notaro Team, both relatively new arrivals in the class and promise a fight to the finish for victory. Out of podium position but always in the top running are Alessio Marinelli’s Candida Sailing Team, Davide Albertini’s Leviathan and local Mirko de Falco on Pecceré.

The Audi Melges 20 Gold Cup is the very last event of the 2012 Sailing Series Circuit. At the moment, twenty-nine races and four discards form the provisional ranking are led by Marinelli, seven points ahead of Renato Vallivero’s Turnover.

Racing will conclude tomorrow, Sunday with PRO Fabio Barraso setting the first warning signal at 10.30. The last start of the day could come as late as 14.45. Weather forecasts detail strong wind, rain and showers.

Organized by B-Plan Sports and Event in collaboration with Melges Europe, the International Class Audi Melges 20 Association and Circolo Canottieri Napoli, the Gold Cup will consist of a maximum of ten races to be held from Thursday, with a 10.30 am start time, through Sunday.

In Napoli, teams will enjoy the Audi Experience. Throughout the weekend, the drivers of the Audi Driving School Experience will entertain their biggest fans with a series of test drives lasting of about 20 minutes. The guests will demo the latest Audi automotive models including the new A3.
