Robert Hanna’s DK 46 Shogun won the first race of the Range Series on Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne, but a win by Alan Whiteley’s Beneteau 44.7 Cougar in Race 2 on the weekend, with Shogun third, gives Cougar a one point advantage over her rival. Saturday’ Race 2, hosted by Hobsons Bay Yacht Club at Williamstown, was held in perfect sailing conditions on Port Phillip; an 11-13 knot south-south easterly breezes under sunny skies. ‘If you were lucky it moved five degrees over the two hours of racing, so there were no free passing lanes,’ Stuart Broom, who helmed Shogun from Royal Geelong Yacht Club, said after the race. Shogun’s sister ship, Dekadence, owned by Sandringham Yacht Club Commodore, finished Race 2 in second place, putting her in fifth place overall, just one point behind Lou Abraham’s Sydney 38 Challenge and Phil Simpfendorfer’s Elliott 11, Veloce in what is shaping up to be a close series. After a clean start for all, Chris Dare’s recently purchased Corby 49 Flirt, led the 14 nautical mile windward/leeward four beat three run race from start to finish, claiming line honours and finishing fourth on corrected time. The two DK 46’s, Shogun and Dekadence virtually match raced each other around the course, with the latter coming home 59 seconds ahead for second overall. The winner, Cougar, finished 15 minutes behind the leaders, to win IRC Division 1 by 19 seconds. Missing in action was Michael Hiatt’s Cookson 50, Living Doll, following rig damage after competing in the Melbourne Stanley race last weekend, in which Flirt won line honours and Cougar scored an overall victory from Shogun and Dekadence. The next heat of the Range Series will be sailed on December 3. All five boats, along with Challenge are entered for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race starting December 26 and results from the Melbourne Stanley and Range Series gives good insight into which Melbourne boats should be the top performers.
