Melbourne Winter Series - Perfect really -Cold, blustery and wet

Race Four of the Melbourne Winter Series is on this Sunday, August 1st.

It is likely to be cold, blustery and a bit wet, just like it was for Race Three on July 18. The models all differ currently on exactly what it will be and when, but if it is raceable, then layers and plenty of them, at that, will be the go. The Sailing Committee has already indicated that just the one race will be held, so it won't be too long before crews are back in the showers or bar.

The vessels at or near the top of the tables, like Calm, Wicked, INSX, Goldfinger, Nutcracker and Challenge will certainly be hoping to get a good race in and takeover or secure top spot in the various tables.

Now the final event in the Melbourne Winter Series is the Melbourne to Geelong race, which is on September 11. There's plenty of racing going on before then, but big news with that event is that with the Notice of Race now released, the first entries in the new Cruising Divisions have appeared. Two Divisions are offered, one with kites and the other without.

The first entry in the Cruising with Spinnakers Division was Pretty Woman, from the Royal Brighton Yacht Club of Victoria. Roger and Michele Wale's boat is no stranger to racing, having been in the Melbourne to Hobart Eastcoaster last year and winning the very first McConaghy flag in the 2009 Melbourne to Stanley race.

Their entry has sparked a flurry of activity in the Division and ORCV Rear Commodore, Simon Dryden, was thrilled. 'We created these Divisions to allow more people to get the boat out of the pen, without the need to organise large crews.' It seems to be a very popular idea indeed, with another RBYC vessel, Thunder, also ready for the approximately 40nm event. Tony Garvey, one of her owners said, 'The thing we all really enjoy are the longer Bay races. So, the ORCV's Cruising with Spinnakers is the ideal division for us, as usually there are only the three owners as crew, which are myself and Robina and Brenton Smith. We did the Passage Race earlier in the year, but couldn't get any more time off work and this time we are looking forward to the staying the weekend and enjoying the Saturday night entertainment etc.'

Entertainment is, of course, a regular feature of events at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club and this year will be no different. If the Racing or new Cruising Divisions sound like the go for you, see orcv.org.au for the Melbourne to Geelong Notice of Race and other Melbourne Winter Series details.
