Mashich and Freitas on form in lead up to RS:X World Championship

'Ricardo Santos (BRA) on familiar territory'    Fred Hoffmann
After claiming gold at the RS:X South American Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Nimrod Mashich (ISR) and Patricia Freitas (BRA) have their preparations for the 2013 RS:X World Championship off to a flying start.

Whilst Mashich won the open title the South American title went to Ricardo Santos (BRA) who takes the title for the sixth time and will represent the Brazilian sailing team throughout 2013.

Byron Kokkalanis (GRE) was sandwiched in between Mashich and Santos as he took a well-deserved silver. But the plaudits were left for Santos who continues to be a mainstay on the circuit having sailed in his first Olympic Games at Sydney 2000 and has an eye on fifth Olympics in his home country come 2013.

'This achievement is the result of the dedication and support of many people,' said Santos. 'It is the result of a lot of determination and a lot of passion for my family, team, friends and sponsors. I try to return the water encouragement and affection I get from all of them and, this week, everything went very well.'

Freitas dominated the women's fleet and racked up an impressive run of first and second place results. She comfortably took gold ahead of Bruna Martinelli (BRA) with London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Marina Alabau (ESP) rounding off the podium.
