For regattas to succeed they must have a natural reason-to-be.....the week before Hamilton Island, straight after Hobart, the Australia Day long weekend etc.
The Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week is the week after Hamilton Island and before the south east trades turn. It has an excellent location, a friendly committee and tremendous support from the Townsville Cruising Yacht Club, great sailing conditions, professional management and a very committed and professional sponsor.
In the long term one of the reasons this event will succeed is because major and minor sponsors alike can see that FNQ media are supporting it.
Sure I am biased, as the Media Director. But we had very strong regional media support. Pre-event there were media opportunities from Tuesday to Friday, we had two TV stations who ran fourteen stories between them, the major regional Townsville Bulletin, who ran nine stories and excellent coverage from the ABC and three commercial radio stations, plus a host of weekly and monthly magazines covering the event.
Skippers of Sports boats, Catamarans, IRC, PHS and Cruising boats who did not compete in this latest regatta and who are looking for a northern adventure, should register to get a copy of the 2008 Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week DVD

We are back down south now and there is glorious sunshine, and while we were away our rain gauges filled.
Now is the time to enter the Heaven Can Wait 24 hour race on Lake Macquarie, it's only a few weeks away on the October Long Weekend!!
