Marine Rescue and Coast Guard National Board mediation ends
'Marine Rescue NSW'
.
Marine Rescue NSW and the National Board of Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association (AVCGA) protracted negotiations came to an end on 2 September 2010 when the two parties could not reach agreement.
At issue has been the transfer of NSW Coast Guard assets which have been acquired through significant fundraising efforts of those units from their local NSW communities together with funds allocated by the NSW government to volunteer marine rescue units serving this state, as well as grants from various other organisations.
Marine Rescue NSW has consistently had the view that all assets raised locally should remain local to serve the local communities for which they were acquired.
Although reluctant to negotiate any payment for these assets, the Board of Marine Rescue NSW authorized an offer of up to $250,000, to negotiate a final settlement. The Marine Rescue offer was made in order to minimize inconvenience and interruption of services by the volunteer members of those NSW Coast Guard flotillas that have clearly indicated their preference to become part of Marine Rescue NSW.
It became clear to Marine Rescue NSW that the interests and rights of the NSW Coast Guard flotillas were secondary to a substantial and unrealistic cash settlement sought by the AVCGA National Board and that further negotiations would be futile.
The way forward for Marine Rescue NSW is clear. The NSW Government has indicated its strong support for a single volunteer marine rescue service in NSW and that it unreservedly supports Marine Rescue NSW.
Marine Rescue NSW will take all necessary measures to guarantee that AVCGA units that decide to transition to MRNSW will be able to serve their communities as they have been doing for many years.
Affected members of these units who have dual membership of both AVCGA and Marine Rescue NSW will be asked to form the foundation of Marine Rescue units in their respective areas and begin the process of integrating into Marine Rescue NSW with no further unnecessary delay.
