by Jeni Bone on 18 Apr 2013
Mackay Marina - just one of the marina berth opportunities up for auction. Mackay Marina
Marine Auctions’ online marina berth auction will run until this afternoon, with bidding to end 3pm Thursday 18 April.

There are about 20 marina berths throughout Queensland, including prime locations such as Horizon Shores, Dockside, Moreton Bay Boat Club Marina, Mackay Marina, Raby Bay Marina and more.

Upcoming auctions include: Onsite Boat Auction to be held at Rivergate Marina Saturday 27 April at 10am. Bookings have closed for this Auction; On Site Boat Auction to be held at Runaway Bay Marina, Gold Coast on Sunday 26 May (Sanctuary Cove Boat Show weekend). Marine Auctions are now accepting entries for this Auction.

John Ferrett handles the online auctions for Marine Auctions and says: 'Online auctions broaden a boat’s reach to the world. It’s a win-win for vendor and customer. It reduces costs, opens up the market to more people, increases competition which gets better prices for the vendor, which leads to happy vendors who in many cases, go on to buy another boat.'

The use of webcams facilitates the process and the website, marineauctions.com.au contains thorough descriptions, images and details on all boats and marina berths on offer. Buyers all over Australia, and the world, can see what’s on offer, watch the auction as it happens and bid online.

Pre-loved boats are enjoying buoyant sales, according to principal, Adrian Seiffert, who says ‘there’s one to suit everybody'.

'People entering boating for the first time, those getting back in to it after many years, even long-time boaties are looking around for the best buys and finding pre-loved is the way to go. That’s how they buy their cars, their homes, their clothing, so it makes sense that they are confident to buy second-hand boats from a reputable, reliable source.'

Debriefing the Rio 2016 Olympics with Team USA’s Helena Scutt
I talked with Team USA’s Helena Scutt to hear about her Olympic experience, and to learn more about her post-Rio plans. The 49erFX was introduced to Olympic circles when it replaced the Women’s Match Racing event following the 2012 Games. Not surprisingly, it drew high-performance sailors for the Rio 2016 Olympics, including Team USA’s Paris Henken and Helena Scutt. While Henken and Scutt were Olympic first-timers, they put on a strong show. I caught up with Scutt to hear more about her Olympic experience.

Rio 2016 - Sailors talk of Life at the Extreme on the Atlantic Ocean
Certainly the Volvo Ocean Race catchcry of Life at the Extreme is not a phrase associated with the Sailing Olympics. The 470 crews were suffering the mixed emotions of survival of an extreme test by nature, the cold, and for some elation at their placings, after Thursday's battle for survival. In conditions that looked more out of the Volvo Ocean Race, than an Olympic sailing regatta, crews battled 20kt plus winds and Atlantic Ocean rollers that towered up to four metres.
