Louis Vuitton Trophy: They say fortune is blind...

'Emirates Team New Zealand race Mascalzone Latino (ITA) on day two of the Louis Vuitton Trophy 2010. Auckland, New Zealand.'    Chris Cameron/ETNZ

The say fortune is blind...But bad luck sees just fine. Today Lady Luck brutally turned her back on the crew of Mascalzone Latino Audi Team. During the second upwind leg, after having led the entire race, a titanium halyard clip at the head of the jib broke, forcing the inevitable defeat for the Rascals who showed the ultimate in sportsmanship by finishing the race without the jib.

It is important to note, the two boats are practically twins, provided by the organization, and are selected by a draw the night before the races. Therefore it cannot be argued that there was a lack of care in the preparation of the boat. Sometimes Fate plays a part.

Helmsman Gavin Brady and tactician Morgan Larson immediately showed great determination and no intimidation in facing the Kiwis, putting them under pressure during the prestart, despite Mascalzone's port entry. Brady clearly won the start, controlling Dean Barker from leeward and pushing him to the less favoured left side of the course.

Mascalzone Latino Audi Team quickly capitalized the advantage by rounding the first mark 22 seconds in front. Downwind the Kiwis fought back and closed the delta to 8 seconds. The second upwind leg quickly became the most interesting and closely fought so far in this series, but the breakage of the clip forced the withdrawal for the Italian team, which has shown great character. The newly formed team is undoubtedly coming together rapidly, with a lot of potential still to show.

The other matches of the day saw the victories of Team Origin over All4One, Azzura over Synergy, and Artemis over Aleph.

Tomorrow's match will be against the French of Aleph who only in appearance are the weaker team, having already defeated an expert match racer like Karol Jablonski.
