Louis Vuitton Trophy: America's Cup Challenger first to reach Finals

'Mascalzone Latino (ITA) beat Artemis (SWE) in the Semi finals of the Louis Vuitton Trophy. Auckland New Zealand 19/3/2010'    Chris Cameron/ETNZ

The Latin Rascals were the stars of a remarkable performance, in the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Trophy, reacting to the comeback of the opposing helmsman who evened the match in the second race.

In the last race Gavin Brady masterfully won the start, leaving the Swedish outside the committee boat and inflicting them with a penalty.

It was a champion reaction to the aggressive maneuver with which Artemis won the start in the previous race and evened the results. In fact, four seconds from the start of the second race, Terry Hutchinson at the helm of Artemis was able to sneak in, with great risk, leeward of Mascalzone, find the overlap and push the Rascals over the start line.

The Italian boat then had to re-enter the start box, postponing their appointment with the finals. The first race, instead, was hard fought in the first upwind leg until Mascalzone Latino, slightly late, was able to approach the mark on starboard and then lead the race to the finish.

'We are very satisfied with how we are going,' declared Flavino Favini, team member since the first America's Cup campaign, 'but we will not see the real result until Sunday; now we have to stay relaxed and do the next races well, points are counted when the dust is settled.' Mascalzone Latino Audi Team will fight for the Louis Vuitton Trophy of Auckland against the winner between Azzurra and Emirates Team New Zealand.
