A late withdrawal by the Selangor Yacht Club from Malaysia has created an opening with Jordan Reece, an up and coming match racer and noted Laser sailor, enthusiastically accepting the late entry position.

This now means three prominent Sydney yacht clubs, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC), RSYS and the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) will go head to head when the racing starts this Thursday, 15 November on Sydney Harbour. Each club now has two entries in the regatta.

RNZYS has always been an exceptionally strong club in match racing with 30 graduates from their programs involved with the ten challenges for the 2007 America’s Cup, including Gavin Brady.

Although the CYCA expect the competition to be strong, it believes it is still in a solid position to take out its fifth consecutive win in its own Bavaria Yachts International Youth Match Racing Regatta. The formidable Will Ryan, last year’s bridesmaid, and Will MacKenzie will lead the CYCA’s defence against some of the best youth match racers in the world.

Day 1 of the under 21 ISAF grade 3 regatta, on Wednesday 14 November, will be an orientation day followed by four days of fast and furious on water action aboard the CYCA’s Elliott 6m class yachts.

Amongst the other Australian teams the competition will be fierce with David Adams back as coach for Reece and the RSYS’s highly experienced David Chapman, who will spearhead their attack.

The RPAYC is putting up two skilled teams headed by Sam Sexton and Nina Curtis, whose strong sailing background and recent successes in women’s match racing championships makes the latter a pre-regatta favourite. Both have raced at the CYCA in the past and led their teams into top overall placings and they are both now very familiar with the Elliotts.

Sandringham Yacht Club strengthened in match racing through their recent hosting of the Women’s and Open Australian titles and could be the dark horse of the regatta, which is highly regarded on the international youth match racing circuit.

CYCA member Tony Kirby has for the fourth year agreed to be the naming rights sponsor through his company, North South Yachting.

'We are delighted to be able to support the development of youth sailors. We see match racing as one of the best extensions for these young sailors in refining their rules and boat handling skills,' Kirby said today.
