Kokomo leads Rhodes Waterside Farr 40 regatta

The Rhodes Waterside Farr 40 regatta, being held at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club on the Barrenjoey Circle off Sydney’s northern beaches, started well for Lang Walker and his crew on Kokomo. The nine boat fleet started racing in a 15 knot sou’ east breeze and by the end of the third race the breeze had swung around to a weak easterly at six knots.
Race one was a replica of Kokomo’s regatta winning performances from the previous regatta at Port Stephens. The navy hulled boat lead from start to finish with current world champion Richard Perini and his team on Evolution slotting into second for the duration of the race. New Zealander Brett Neill sailing Venom and Michael Milne’s Blacksnake fought it out between them during the race for third and fourth with Blacksnake finally edging out Venom to take third.
Venom jumped the start of race two and had to restart while the rest of the fleet headed to the top mark in an easing breeze. Evolution led from Kokomo at the top with Steve O’Rourke’s Panther in third. When the front runners got to the bottom mark Panther had a tough time getting the kite down which caused a slip in position for them. As Kokomo and Evolution headed to the finish line they started a surfing contest matching each other wave for wave. Evolution managed to hold Kokomo off to cross the line one second in front. Ray Roberts Quantum Racing improved from their first leg position of seventh to cross the line in third.
A general recall for the start of race three and a swing of the breeze to the right forced the race committee to move the course for the second attempt to start race the race. A very shifty breeze had the race committee changing the mark positions on every leg of the race as it swung from 120 degrees to 80 degrees and back to 90 degrees.
Kokomo again charged into the lead, with Evolution in hot pursuit and these two boats repeated their first race finishes. Quantum Racing had a consistent race to maintain third position throughout.
David Urry’s War Games from South Australia sailed well all day to end the first day of racing in third place. ‘We had a great day and it all came together for us but there are still two days to go,’ commented Walker after racing.
