Will Tiller and his team of Daniel Pooley and James Maloney from Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron have taken out the Bavaria Yachts International Youth Match Racing Championship in shifting conditions that required the course to be re-laid several times during the day.

With the forecast predicting 20 – 25 knots from the north, the Race Committee arrived on station in Rushcutters Bay to a westerly breeze that required a move to Point Piper and then after the next shift, a move back to Rushcutters Bay. Racing finally got underway at midday with James Williamson (RNZYS) and Lucinda Whitty (RSYS) both over at the start of the first race and Whitty receiving a penalty for not keeping clear. Williamson took the race by 37 seconds and in their second match, Williamson inflicted another penalty on Whitty prior to the start and he took this match by 33 seconds securing 3rd place in the championship and relegating Whitty to 4th place.

The races for 1st and 2nd places between Tiller and Amanda Scrivenor (CYCA/AS&DS) were close racing with Scrivenor taking the first race by eight seconds after the lead changed three times on the second upwind leg. Tiller evened up the score in the second race after trailing Scrivenor until he sailed over the top of her on the last downwind leg taking the race by nine seconds.

In the third race, Scrivenor received a penalty on the start line for tacking in Tiller’s water. She forfeited the lead when trying to wash off the penalty at the top mark but unfortunately it was inside the two boat length circle and the penalty remained outstanding. Tiller took this race by 40 seconds and in the final race, Scrivenor led until approx 100 metres from the finish, when she gybed away into less pressure and Tiller extended on port and then gybed onto starboard to take the race by 8 boat lengths.

Mary Ann Maxwell presented the winning crew with the Joy Ride trophy and Bob Mulkearns and Jamie Miller from Bavaria Yachts presented all place getters with Bavaria sailing gear and gift vouchers. Garry Linacre, Vice Commodore thanked Bavaria Yachts for their sponsorship of the event and their support of the Youth Sailing Academy.
