Ten RS600 turned out on the weekend of the 13 June, for the RS classes Open event at Lee on Solent SC with entries coming from as far away as Cardiff and Pembrokeshire.

On arriving at Lee on Solent the wind did not look promising with a flat calm right across to Cowes. Racing got under way as published at 1 o’clock, the fleet trapezed out to the committee boat but by the time the race started it was sitting down sailing.

The fleet got away after the RS300s with only an individual recall, James Sainsbury opened his account he intended to go on with a 1st, followed in closely by Ifan James from Pembs YC and Andy Heissig in third. The second race took place after a postponement for the wind, which filled in enough for some to get onto the wire.

The racing was much tighter this time round with a few shouts at the gybe marks from mid fleet, out in front Sainsbury took another 1st with Jon Powell in second. The third race of the day saw the wind die again and local Mike Ellis who led round the first mark suffered downwind to finish 5th. Sainsbury and Ifan James were the first 2 boats home.

On Sunday there was little wind again, just enough to trapeze upwind for the first race, in which a few went left up the beat when the tide favoured the right, Sainsbury continued his dominance of the event with Heissig and John Bradbury from Mount Batten SC following him in.

In race 5 the wind built on the 2nd beat to comfortable trapezing weather, it was the only one that Sainsbury didn’t win, Ifan James was first, with Sainsbury behind and Ellis following them in. The wind continued to build for the final race with all the fleet finally getting to stretch their legs, Ellis lead round the top mark but went the wrong way up the 2nd beat and came in 2nd behind Sainsbury with Jon Powell 3rd.
