Italia Telecom wins TJV class 40

On Monday morning at 03 hours 02 minutes and 22 seconds, French hour, Giovanni Soldini and Pietro d' Ali crossed the finishing line of this 8th edition of the Transatlantic race Jacques Vabre as winners in Class 40.

Italia Telecom sailed the course in 22 days 13 hours of race, nearly five hours ahead of Atao Audio System. Arriving in the afternoon to take the final podium position was Monbana Chocolates. Also joining the pontoon at El Salvador de Bahia was Great American III, skippered by RIch Wilson and Mike Birch, in 16th place, the final IMOCA 60 to finish.

Giovanni Soldini is one of Italy's most famous and accomplished offshore sailors. His resume includes the Vendee Globe, BOC Challenge and extensive oceanic multihull racing. Pietro D'Ali was the winner of the last Transat AG2R and a member of Prada during the last America's Cup.

It was your first test in Class 40. Your impressions?

'Class 40 is a super boat, fun to sail and very simple. You can make a boat in five months and then win a race! The budgets are not very big, there is not thus too much pressure and thus you sail! I will remain in Brazil until January then I will return in a convoy. Then, I will go to Great Britain to take part in the OSTAR. Better than to remain six months in a building site,eh? (laughter!)'.

Caffari’s first transatlantic crossing onboard an Open 60 has been a huge learning curve for the inspirational yachtswoman. The co-skippers faced difficult conditions throughout the race.

Three Imoca boats home in Transat Jacques Vabre
Foncia crossed the arrival line today (Tuesday) at 16h 37'05 French time – 12h 37'05 local time The run for the first place in the Imoca was as hot as the Brazilian temperature. Foncia was pushed to her limits. Safran took second place at 13h 31' 55' local time (17h 31 '55' French time). Cheminées Poujoulat arrived 45 minutes and 30 seconds behind Safran. Crèpes Whaou! crossed the line at 7h 29' 39' local time (11h 29' 39' French time) after 15d 22h 27' at sea.

Safran is fast, very fast, showing a better speed than Foncia over the last 24 hours and therefore chipping away the miles gap between them after overtaking Cheminées Poujoulat overnight

Crèpes Whaou! should arrive within two days in Bahia ahead of the first Imoca? Crèpes Whaou! should arrive within two days in Bahia ahead of the first Imoca, Safran is 'containing' Foncia's acceleration and is faster than Cheminées Poujoulat. However two things could still modify the Imoca rankings: the ability of VM Materiaux to reach the Recife way point without tacking, and the weather conditions along the Brazilian coast.

The front runners of the Imoca fleet are out of the doldrums with Foncia leading the fleet The front runners of the Imoca fleet are out of the doldrums. Foncia is leading the fleet by eight short miles, with by VM Matériaux (second) at her west and Cheminées Poujoulat (third) on her heels. Safran is fourth in the east, fifth is Ecover.

However, we need to wait for a few more hours to see in what condition the boats at her east -- Cheminées Poujoulat, Safran, Ecover 3 and Groupe Bel -- will exit the area. They are sailing close enough in lateral with Foncia to be able to run the extra miles and catch up with the leaders.

Slow and frustrating for Ecover in TJV
Slow and frustrating one for Mike Golding and Bruno Dubois on ECOVER 3. Ecover 3 have struggled with only light winds since early this morning, ghosting along at just six to eight knots at times they have endeavoured to make to the west to cover the chasing pack of five boats which are to their west and within 20 miles of them.

Who will emerge first from the Doldrums in TJV?
Cheminées Poujoulat is leading the Imoca with the Doldrums shaking up the fleet. The Doldrums are now shaking up the Imoca fleet and putting more pressure on the already exhausted sailors: gales, lightning that hit close to the boats with a deafening crash, and winds that disappeared for about 10 hours. Cheminées Poujoulat is now leading the Imoca class.
