From April 28 to May 4, the Circolo Vela Marsala will host the International Moth Class European Championship - an event that is sure to bring entertainment and fun because of the boat’s peculiarities.
Despite the 'fresh' spring had so far, with meteorological conditions finally set in Marsala already at the end of April, the heat should allow racing with 12-16 knots of breeze, in this situation the race course is not plagued by significant wave and therefore the conditions of maximum performance for the Moth (medium wind and flat water) seem close at hand. We expect exciting racing also for the audience located at the nearby beaches that will see the amazing speeds that the Moth can achieve.
The format of the competition consists of five days of racing plus one day of rest. There will also be a 'long race' from cape Lilybeo to Favignana and back, a total of 12 miles of sea that the Moth with their impressive speed will travel in less than an hour!
It is expected the participation of athletes from around the world, the proximity of sailing events like America's
Cup in Naples and the RC44 in Trapani led many professionals that usually sail on Moth in the area.
The Moth is the precursor of 'foiling' in sailing, today's large America's Cup catamarans and other ocean vessels have adopted the technologies developed for years now on the Moth, cutting-edge solutions that allow you to reach incredible speeds for boats being moved only by the wind.
Thanks to the 'wings' submerged (foils) the Moth 'flies' raised half a meter off water providing minimal resistance and propelled by a sail of only eight square meters., Easily reaches speeds of 18 - 20 knots with only 9-10 true wind! The Moth are the boats that have allowed the AC72 catamarans to develop on a macroscopic scale the technique of foiling, the crews of America's Cup practice their foiling on the foiling Moth before tackling the enormous AC72.
'The Circolo Velico Marsala (Marsala Sailing Club) celebrates with this European Championship, the 40th anniversary of its foundation - says the president Andrea Baiata. An event that certainly in terms of entertainment and spectacle will leave an indelible mark.'
The President of the F.I.V. Sicily, Ignazio Florio Pipitone, is excited about the event and hopes to achieve a spread of Moth boats on the island.
For the second consecutive year, for the fourth time in six years, IMCA Italy, the Italian Moth Class Association, receives, from the international class, the task of organizing an event of international scope.
To date, the events in Italy have shown a record of participation and satisfaction from athletes, spectators and sponsors. With the European championship in Marsala, IMCA Italy wants to extend to the south and center the promotion of the class on Italian territory. IMCA Italy, provides the Italian athletes with free transport to the event.
