International Cadet World Championships - Australians second and third
|
Australian crews Anton and Julian Sasson and Alec and Samantha Bailey look set to place second and third overall with one race to sail at the International Cadet world championships in Poland. The champion Polish crew of Malecki Krzysztof and Mikolaj is unbeatable, scoring their six wins of regatta in race 11 overnight to have a net score of 14 points after two discard races. The Sasson brothers from Sandringham Yacht Club in Victoria placed second and 11th in the two races on day five to be second overall on 39 points, while Tasmania’s Alec and Samantha Bailey from Sandy Bay Sailing Club notched up a fifth and second for a net 57 points in third overall. Australian team members hold five of the top 11 places overall, with Ella Connor and Hannah Chadwick from Sandy Bay Sailing Club placing 53rd and 51st overnight to drop from fifth to ninth overall on 132 points. Ian Lee and Akex Brzoska from Royal Geelong Yacht club are 10th on 136 points (44th and 14th places overnight) while Isabella Say and Ben Brill from Sandringham Yacht Club are 11th on 139 points (22nd and 32nd overnight). The second last day of the championship started off warm, but with very little wind. It was going to be a long day out on the water, although the sailors and their support team never expected to be out there for nearly seven hours!! The first attempt to sail race 10 ended with the race abandoned as the wind died away, leaving all the 80 Cadet dinghies in a parking lot. It was not until after an on-the-water lunch that the breeze freshened to 12-14 knots and the fleet began to get ready for a race. While the course was being moved, mast rakes were being changed in anticipation of the stronger winds. Just before the start sequence the mast fell down on the Australian boat of Ashleigh Dyer and Georgina Hughes from Port Lincoln Yacht Club. As the dads in the support boat worked hard to get the mast back up, the horn sounded and the postponement flag went down. The black flag followed and the girls had to sit out the race. With race 10 under day, Anton and Julian Sasson began well and were in fourth position at the windward mark, with Alec and Samantha Bailey in eighth, but the other Australian crews well back in the fleet. At the top mark for the second time, a Spanish crew was leading with Anton and Julian working their way up to second and Alec and Samantha up to fifth. The Spansh boys held their place to the finish of the shortened course, as did the two top placed Australian crews, but the Polish champions came home fast to take third berth. Isabella Say and Ben Brill picked up another 11 positions in that leg to finish in 22nd position, a terrific effort. With the wind down to about 7-8 knots, Race 11 got underway mid afternoon and at the windward mark, Alec and Samantha popped their kite in second position, behind the Polish crew. All six other Australian crews rounded in the 30s and 40s. At the top mark for the second time, Alec and Samantha looked comfortable in their second position and maintained this place to the finish. Anton and Julian, who had put their heads down, hauled in 26 boats to finish 11th. 'It was a mixed day on the water and the Australian sailors found the conditions fairly challenging,' reported Marija Sasson, mother of the Sasson brothers and team ‘scribe’. 'What was great to see was that when they came off the water, they all had smiles on their faces. They will be back in fighting form for the last race tomorrow!' After 11 races, the AUS team is provisionally positioned as follows: 2nd AUS 5509 – Anton Sasson and Julian Sasson (Sandringham Yacht Club) 3rd AUS 9778 – Alec Bailey and Samantha Bailey (Sandy Bay Sailing Club) 9th AUS 9699 – Ella Connor and Hannah Chadwick (Sandy Bay Sailing Club) 10th AUS 4109 - Ian Lee and Alex Brzoska (Royal Geelong Yacht Club) 11th AUS 9529 – Isabella Say and Ben Brill (Sandringham Yacht Club) 26th AUS 9530 – Jackie Stokes and Katie Mullins (Adelaide Sailing Club) 38th AUS 9747 – Ashleigh Dyer and Georgina Hughes (Port Lincoln Yacht Club) In the Promotional Fleet, Alice and Grace Endersbee also had a challenging day, but remain in 11th position overall.
