International Cadet World Championships - Australians on track

Australian Cadet Team - Germany - International Cadet World Championships 2011 Mariji Sasson
International Cadet world championships 2011 are being held at the German seaside town of Kuhlungsborn, on the Baltic Sea, from 27th July to 5th August. Racing starts today, 30th July.

Australian has seven crews in the world series and two crews in the promotional event.

Once again, the top seven boats from the 2010-2011 Nationals (held at Sandringham Yacht Club in December/January) all accepted their invitation to attend and are expected to be highly competitive.

Whilst competitors have been able to train for the past week, strong winds and rain saw the practice cancelled.

The Australian team for the world championship comprise Sean Keen (16) and Oscar Mitton (13) from Adelaide Sailing Club, SA, Anton Sasson (16) and Julian Sasson (12), Sandringham Yacht Club, Vic, Oliver Burnell (14) and Sam Abel (11), Sandy Bay Sailing Club, Tas, Jonathan Cooper (15) and Thomas Cooper (13), Sandy Bay Sailing Club, Ashleigh Dyer (16) and Georgina Hughes (14), Port Lincoln Yacht Club, SA, Cameron Philcox (15) and Cody Groat (13), Larges Bay Sailing Club, and Samantha Bailey (13) and Hannah Chadwick (11) from Sandy Bay Sailing Club.

The two crews in the promotional event, run in conjunction with the worlds, are; Alice Endersbee (15) and Eliza Davis (7) and Grace Endersbee (14) and Matilda Davis (8) both from Victoria’s Sandy Bay Sailing.

The Worlds Championship has attracted 75 entries from 12 countries. Strong competition is expected once again this year from the Argentinian, British, Dutch and Polish sailors, as well as Australia which has had top three placings in the last two worlds.

Coach of the Australian team is Todd Hughes, a Laser and ex-Cadet sailor, who has taken over the coaching duties from his brother Shane who coached the previous Australian teams in 2009 and 2010. The team manager is Greg Keen.

The team arrived in Kuhlungsborn in rain and wind (perhaps a little too much on some days). 'We all hoped that we would see some sun and warmth as the town is a beautiful seaside town with great restaurants, shops and beaches. We eventually did,' reports team spokesperson Mariji Sasson.

'After four days of training and a great deal of fine-tuning, the Australian sailors and coach are satisfied with their charter boats. All boats passed measurement (with a little bit of tweaking required on most of the boats).

'The team has been training in winds of 5-20 knots and the weather has been warming up. However, the rain and wind came again today and the RO has cancelled the practice race.

'The sailing waters are very lumpy and the weather forecast (apart from the first day and the second possibly) is forecast to be quite light.

'We have only had one small drama with one of our crews. Julian Sasson three days ago tripped over at the club and landed awkwardly on his left wrist, resulting in a green stick fracture.

'Fortunately, one of our great dads, Robin Endersbee, has ensured that Julian has a removable and waterproof cast that he will wear when he sails. He is a tough little crew who will keep going like an Eveready battery!' added Mariji (his mother, incidentally). International Cadet Championships website
