For many New Zealand sailing clubs, October marks the opening of the summer sailing season. Sail-World's camera was down at Wakatere Boating Club today to take in the Opening Day of one of New Zealand's top dinghy sailing clubs which started in 1926 as a sailing canoe club. In fact, Wakatere means fast canoe.

The club races in eight classes. There are mnay instances of three generations of sailing families being actively involved in the club. The club has stuck by its traditons, one of which, in conjunction with the North Shore City Council and local heritage society is to maintain the traditional racing tower. On Opening Day, heritage racing is sailed, with startes off the tower and an offshore mark, rather than the usual patrol boat starts.

The day is a great opportunity to view the fleet, and have a chat - Wakatere Boating Club - Opening Day 2009 -  Richard Gladwell   Click Here to view large photo
