There is a lot of misunderstanding about China, particularly if your views are formed on the basis of TV news. The giant nation is undergoing a tremendous change as it both seeks to retain its own culture and identity and embrace, or rather shake hands, with the West.

On the Chinese mainland it is often difficult to gain an overall impression of this growth - it is really when you are at sea that the true magnitude of the development strikes home.
