ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships 2011 - RS-X only race on Day 4

by Sail-World on 13 Jul 2011 In a rare move, there was sailing on the scheduled rest day in the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships 2011 in Zadar, Croatia.

Not to get too carried away, only two events were sailed - the Girls and Boys Windsurfer (RS:X) - which sailed two races on the fourth race day of the competition, to catch up with races lost over the opening three days due to light winds. The rest of the fleets enjoyed a day of rest.

Normally the rest day is used that, and in past Youth Worlds regatta organisers have been criticised for not racing on the rest or lay day, even though being well behind schedule - and to make matters worse, the lay day has often had the best sailing conditions of the regatta. It seems that in Croatia, there has been a welcome break with this 'tradition'.

However true to form, today, the rest day, had the best breeze of the regatta - with moderate winds prevailing instead of the sub-5kt winds that have plagued the first three days of racing.

Youth Olympic Games gold medallist, Siripon Kaewduang-Ndam (THA) and Spain’s Mateo Sanz won both of their races today in the RS:X Boys and Girls.

Kaewduang-Ndam won both of her races and has closed the gap on RS:X Girls leader Veronica Fanciulli (ITA) to two points. In Race 5 the Thai girl opened up a 58 second lead at the windward mark. She was able to relax throughout the remainder of the race and comprehensively took the race victory. And it was business as usual for her as she won Race 6 by a health margin.

The Thai RS:X sailor said, 'The wind here is quite light, just like Thailand and I am really satisfied with my work today.'

Fanciulli finished second in both of her races today and retains her lead on eight points. Kaewduang-Ndam is second on ten points and Israel’s Naomi Cohen had a good day finishing third and fourth and sits third overall with 15 points.

In the RS:X Boys Spain’s Mateo Sanz had a perfect day claiming the race win in both of the races but Korea’s Cho Wonwoo, who finished ninth and fourth in today’s racing, retains his lead overall on nine points points.

The Spaniard said, 'I am very happy because I have improved my results after winning both races today and I was trying to get on the podium so I am happy.

'Today was the best day of the championship for wind. The wind was around 8-9 knots and I am very good in this wind so I benefit from the conditions.'

Wonwoo leads on nine points, Sanz sits second on 12 points and Pawel Tarnowski, who finished third and 11th today, is third overall on 18 points.

In the overall national standings, for the Nations Cup, Poland leads from France and Spain - however competition is close with just 38 points covering the top seven countries. The Nations Cup is presented for the country with the best points across the competition, it is a very prestigious and keenly sought trophy from the regatta.
