ISAF World Cup: Kiwi Stars move into third in Princess Sofia Trophy

The New Zealand Star crew of Hamish Pepper and Jim Turner have moved into third place overall in the Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta being sailed at Palma Spain.
The event is the third on the seven event ISAF World Cup circuit for Olympic classes, and is being used a a build up for many teams who will compete in the 2012 Olympics in three months time.
After placing second in the seventh and first race of the day, sailing in the Two Man Keelboat event (Star) Pepper and Turner turned in their worst place of the regatta, a 13th, but it was sufficent for them to move past Fernando Echavarri (ESP) and into a podium place.
In the Heavyweight Men Singlehander (Finn), Dan Slater had a mixed bag, finishing sixteenth in the first race, but coming back with a useful sixth placing in the final race of the day. He holds the same overall place from the previous day. Triple Gold medlaist, Ben Ainslie dominates the regatta with a 23 point lead after just four days of racing.
Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders lie in 16th place overall after scoring two 13th places in the Gold fleet of the Mens Two Hander (470). In the Womens event, Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie pulled their second best place of the regatta - a seventh place in the last race of the day, but were disqualified from the start of the first race for a starting infringement - that result became their discard in what has generally become a series of double digit placings for the top Kiwi crew.
Sailing in the Womens Singlehanded event (Laser Radial) Sara Winther also picked up a BFD on the start of the eighth and final race of the day, and finished 12th in the other race sailed. She lies in 18th overall and will need to cut back a 20 point margin to make the cut for the medal race, which looks unlikely with two days racing remaining.
The only New Zealand other crew competing in the regatta, the Womens Match Racing team failed to progress beyond the repechage phase, and were eliminated yesterday.
