The second leg of the prestigious ISAF Sailing World Cup will be sailed out of Melbourne’s Sandringham Yacht Club from December 1st - 8th 2013.
Australia’s sailing team was the most successful at the London 2012 Olympic Games and there is strong interest from around the world in testing themselves against this sailing powerhouse team.
An important 15 entry team from China led by London 2012 Olympic Gold Medallist and 2012 Rolex Female Sailor of the year, Lijia Xu, spearheads excellent support from Asia at the World Cup in Melbourne.
With Japan now set to stage the 2020 Olympic Games, the Melbourne event will become even more important in years ahead as Event Director and Olympic Gold Medallist Mark Turnbull explains. 'We are very pleased to welcome the big team from China, and over coming years we will be working with them and all countries in our region to ensure that by the Japan Olympics in 2020 that this part of the world can dominate the sport.'
'Not only does competing in our event assist them on their journey to Rio by allowing them to sail against some of Australia's (and therefore the world's) best sailors, it also significantly boost the quality of our competition and atmosphere ashore. '
Online entries can be still be made for both the Olympic classes and the 2013 Sail Melbourne Invited Classes. With five days before entries close on November 26th there are already more than 550 athletes from 23 countries entered.
The full suite of classes for the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, will be contested in Melbourne.
The Invited Classes are Laser Radial Men, Laser 4.7, Men and Women’s Kiteboard, Viper, 420, 29er, Optimist, OK dinghy, 2.4R, SKUB18, Liberty Access and Cadet Dinghy.
Competitors and coaches can enter by completing the online entry form on www.sailingworldcupmelbourne.com and paying the required fees. Entries may be accepted until November 26, 2013 at the discretion of the Organising Authority if submitted with the full entry fee payment.
The Notice of Race is available and entries are open in both the Olympic and Invited Classes at www.sailingworldcupmelbourne.com
