ISAF Match Racing Umpire Clinic Hong Kong will take place 2 to 6 May

by Richard Knight on 14 Mar 2013
2090829small - ISAF Match Racing Umpire Clinic Hong Kong Richard Knight
ISAF Match Racing Umpire Clinic, organised by HKSF, subvented by LCSD, will be hosted by RHKYC from 2 to 6 May. An ISAF clinic provides an effective springboard to launch match racing in a region in a way that will be consistent with match racing and umpiring around the world.

The clinic provides a balance between classroom sessions and real umpiring on the water, all lead by two ISAF IU Instructors. For this event the instructors will be Marianne Middelthon (NOR) and Jan Stage (DEN).

Course Schedule
Thursday 2 May 1830hrs – 2130hrs - Welcome and Class room session
Friday 3 May 1830hrs – 2130hrs - Class room session
Saturday 4 May 0900hrs – 1700hrs - On the water judging practice
Sunday 5 May 0900hrs – 1800hrs - On the water judging practice
Monday 6 May 1300hrs – 1700hrs, 1830hrs – 2130hrs - On the water judging practice and final de-brief
Class room review session

As the clinic will take place at the 1O1O 4G Hong Kong Match Racing Nationals a major part of the clinic will be connected to that event. The participants at the clinic will be umpiring, while being coached by the instructors. They may also take part in other aspects of the regatta.

The clinic gives no formal qualifications; there are no tests or assessments - only plenty of coaching and learning opportunities. However, the clinic is a tool and after taking part in a clinic, you will be able to umpire, sometimes with a more experienced umpire, and to continue developing your umpiring skills. With more practice, it is possible to continue umpiring and to eventually enough experience and practice to take an IU seminar and maybe become an ISAF International Umpire.

The clinic is open for sailors and/or judges who are interested in learning more about match racing and umpiring. There are no requirements for pre-qualifications - however, it is important that you are familiar with sailing and it is easier if you know something about The Racing Rules of Sailing.
