Sail-World.com : IRC Solent Series day 6
IRC Solent Series day 6

.
The closing weekend of the summer IRC Solent Series Championship comprised the Nab Tower Race organised by the Island Sailing Club on Saturday and the Royal Corinthian's Tiny Mitchell Trophy on the Sunday.

The fleet got away in a single start at the unusually civilised time of 1100 under sunny clear blue skies with an extremely shifty easterly at 6-12 knots and an east going tide. Most of the fleet stayed on the Island shore although a few ventured to take the north channel gambling on clearer air. The tide carried most of the fleet to the Nab and turned for the long run home. In class 1 there was a close fought battle between Erivale III (Michael Greville) and Tarka II (Guy Prest) with Erivale taking the gun by just 22 seconds on corrected time after 4 1/2 hours racing. Just 36 seconds later Jua Kali (Dominic Hurndall) came in third.

In class 2 the fleet was somewhat more spread out. Strait Dealer (David Franks) took the honours in a first appearance in the Series continuing a great run of performance in 2012. Jumping Jellyfish (Mark Ross), also making a first appearance in the Series came in nearly two minutes behind with Kurketrekker (Stephen Parry) a further four minutes astern. In class 3 honours went to 2XS (Aindriu McCormack) also making a first appearance in the Series 4 1/2 minutes clear of Tinker T (David Bunn) closely followed by Colin Fry's Imadjinn.

Making a clean sweep of first appearance winners for the race, Jo Richards' Woof won both class 4 and the overall Nab Tower Race. Second in both came Espada (Louise Morton) nearly 11 minutes clear of If.... (Martin Moore). Particular congratulations to Jo and Louise for great performances in what was a day for bigger boats.

Sunday was a different story and only a very small fleet ventured out into driving rain, 25+ knots from the east and poor visibility. For a number of boats there were make or break opportunities for the Series results but these were thwarted by a very sensible cancellation by the Royal Corinthian thus drawing the Series to a close.

This was the seventh year of the IRC Solent Series Championship, and with over 120 boats taking part, this was the biggest turnout yet.

Overall Winners:

Class 1: 1st - Jua Kali, 2nd - Ghost, 3rd - J Dream
Class 2: 1st - Kurketrekker, 2nd - Aztec, 3rd - High Tension
Class 3: 1st - Tinker T, 2nd - Just Enough, 3rd - Xarifa
Class 4: 1st - Crakajax, 2nd - Magic, 3rd - Eskymo
