2009 Greater New York Dinghy Regatta. The weather forecast for this weekend was miserable. On Saturday morning, the Sunday prediction was for 15-25 knots with gusts 30+; a high temperature of 45 degrees and a wind-chill factor in the low-30’s so to the applause of the participants, the Race Committee announced that it would bend over backwards to have as many races on Saturday as possible and Sunday’s competition was canceled.
The weather cooperated as the predicted rain and high winds for Saturday didn’t develop. Conditions on Western Long Island Sound were cloudy with winds from the NNE at 10-15 knots throughout the day.
All ten teams showed up but Stevens withdrew from the regatta after it’s A and B division boats were unable to start the first race. Three boats were disqualified for crossing the start/finish line when the gate was closed.
As usual, sailors enjoyed NYC bagels and cream cheese for breakfast; hot New England clam chowder at mid-day, and the 'World’s Best' cheesecake at the end of the regatta, which was near sunset when the last of a full round-robin of 20 races was completed.
Fordham would like to thank Paul Laddomada & Maura Mandrano for the use of their yacht, DANIELLE, as Race Committee boat; Mr. Warren Krug, who helped run and score the races; Ms. Bridget Walter, a professional photographer, who took nearly 1,000 pictures, which will be made available for purchase when ready; Matt Badila ’10 & Mateusz Plaza ’12, who manned our safety boat, YARD SAIL, and relocated the marks when necessary, and Bridget Dalton ’13 and the Fordham crew on-shore, who did all the little things to help the regatta run smoothly.
Congratulations to the team from Fordham University: Joe Turchiano ’11 & Samantha Zimmer ’12 and Ryann Hall ’11 & Emma Pfohman ’13 for winning the 44th competition of this historical event and having their school name added to the beautiful Faculty Advisors Trophy, which remains on display in the Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Center on Fordham’s Rose Hill campus.

The history of the event
'A championship for the colleges of New York’s metropolitan area was planned in 1947 but its inauguration was delayed by bad weather until the following Spring when the faculty advisors of Cooper Union, King’s Point, New York State Maritime, Stevens Tech, and Webb Institute, the five original contestants, presented a permanent trophy in the form of a plaque containing a half-model of the Interclub Dinghy. Hofstra will become a regular participant at the next championship, and other metropolitan colleges will be eligible upon joining the Association. It is as yet uncertain whether the Greater New York Championship, a two-crew event, will be held annually or semi-annually.'
Until the early to mid-70’s events such as this were held twice annually. Kings Point hosted this championship 36X from the spring of 1948 through the spring of 1978. In addition to the colleges named above, Fordham, Columbia, Army, Princeton & Rutgers soon began participating.
It is not known why the competition ceased after the 1978 regatta but in 2002, the Faculty Advisors Trophy was found in a closet at Kings Point and transferred to Fordham University, which resurrected this event as an annual regatta and has hosted it ever since. In 2004, MAISA changed the title to the Greater New York Dinghy Regatta and since last year, it has been open to all MAISA teams.
