Hyeres World Cup- Kiwis lead but Outteridge Jensen back in 49er fray
by Rob Kothe and the Sail-World team on 22 Apr 2014
ISAF Sailing World Cup, Melbourne Day 5 Outteridge and Jensen (49er) Richard Gladwell
www.photosport.co.nz
Very talented New Zealander sailor Peter Burling was one of the youngest ever Olympic sailing competitors when he sailed 470 in Qingdao.
After that campaign, he took over the helm, teamed up with World Splash Champion Blair Tuke, and they switched to the 49er skiff, becoming training partners to Australia's Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, who brought them up to speed quickly. The Kiwis took the Silver medal in London 2012 behind the Australian Gold medallists.
Since then Outteridge and Jensen have been otherwise engaged with the Artemis America’s Cup team and the Kiwis have been racking up the results. The Australian return to the 49er fray has been much anticipated but they stayed away from the World Sailing Cup in Mallorca.
In Palma, Burling and Tuke, the 2013 49er World Champions dominated ahead of the Danish team of Qingdao 2008 Gold medallist Jonas Warrer and London 2012 Bronze medallist Peter Lang.
Sail-World caught up with Outteridge and Jensen in the Hyeres boat park today.
Outteridge explained ‘We’ve been training hard in Australia. For us it was better than going to Palma.
‘We didn’t do a whole lot of training over summer so that was our chance to get in the training with the Australian squad that we needed to do before coming to Europe. Racing is always good but there is no point showing up if you are not ready and now we have done those few weeks back in Australia I think we are ready for this one.
‘We did a couple of training races with them in the last few days with Pete and Blair and a lot of the teams. It was good to do a start with more than three or four boats. We have only really had time for three days on the water here this event is our first hit-out for the season and then we have got the Europeans in July and the Worlds in September.
Iain 'Goobs' Jensen ‘Its s good to be back on the circuit. We did Sail Melbourne but we haven’t raced against a lot of these guys since the worlds last year.
‘We went into the Worlds with only six or seven days in the boat since London 2012. By contrast we have put a bit of effort in so hopefully we can get a decent result.’
Today, sailing in the fleet Outteridge and Jensen scored a 9,2,5, with the drop they are fourth overall, while in the other fleet, their Kiwi rivals scored a first up 16th, then repaired the situation with two bullets to lead the series.
Second overall is GBR's Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign with a 1,3,3 and third is Spain's Diego Botín and Pablo Turrado
