Horse and Buggy take to the Hounds
by Jordan Spencer on 23 Jan 2007
Day One of the SAP 505 Pre-Worlds and most of the 85 boat World's fleet is planning to race today.
One boat some have suggested people might want to keep an eye on is AUS 8893, the Literacy Circle boat sailed by Andrew Hewson and Kane Sinclair from Lake Macquarie, NSW. Andrew (Horse) and Kane (Buggy) are former World Champions in the Cherub Class, former Junior World Champions in the 505 and have five national championships in various classes to their name.
What is interesting though, is that, they have taken a different approach to their rig setup. The 505 allows limited experimentation with rigs, so that competitors can compensate for their size differences. Horse and Kane have brought their hounds, (the attachment point for their sidestays) significantly lower than everyone else.
Their goal has been to create a solid mast down low but to have a flexi top, much like a skiff mast. That way the mast does more of the work during the gusts and they can just sail the boat. Getting an automatic mast set up right is difficult and requires precision and time. So far their form seems to be pretty good, particularly upwind. Just how good, we will see today.
