Hobie 16 Class visits the R18-Teen programme at Point Chev

On February 17th, the Hobie 16 Class had 5 boats at Point Chevalier and the sailors in the R18-Teen programme got some fun sailing in beautiful conditions, with nearly everyone twin trapezing in flat water with a nice 10 knots NE assisted sea breeze.

The R18-Teen group is a large group of sailors that is part of the Junior Programme of after-school sailing (mostly Optimists) comprising 76 sailors on three different days of the week after school. The Teen group mostly sailing laser and splash has joined with adult sailors over 18 who are also keen to get into the fun after work.

It has been great to build some bridges between teen and adult sailors and to build some bridges with the Hobie 16 guys who did a marvelous job to get everyone on the wire and most steering on the wire as well. A group of five Optimist learners went out for a burst too and had a great time. The Hobie 16 were a great inspiration to all the group and a great reason to learn to sail in the first place. The whole place was buzzing and most sailors had never been so far or so fast, let alone trapezing.

This is what club sailing is all about and it has now given a dozen sailors a real taste of what sailing can be like. Auckland Windsurfing was running lessons inshore with the Junior Programme Optimist Sailors nearby and the whole scene was one of activity.

The Hobie PR team called Fleet 46 comprises a number of boats that participate in fun days and family sailing from a variety of venues including Manly and Wakatere and a growing number of these boats are coming together for Hobie events with an emphasis on exciting fun sailing. We finished off with BBQ and refreshments and enjoyed a nice sunset over the Waitakeres as the breeze dropped away to zero. A real nice way to spend a summer evening.
