In the 39th Hempel Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht race, Southern Excellence II has taken line honours. SEx II crossed the finish line outside the lagoon at just after 3.45 am EST this morning in a time just under 64 hours, making this one of the slowest Lord Howe's in recent times.
To take nothing away from the effort, Southern Excellence II's performance in the light and tricky conditions was competitive as skipper Andrew Wenham should go to the clubhouse fourth on IRC and second in the PHS division.
The conditons for 2013 have tested some of Australia's premier ocean racing skippers and presently Frantic leads IRC with AFR Midnight Rambler (Ed Psaltis) second and Alegria V (Rod Jones) third.
Next boat due to cross the finish line is the TP52 Frantic, which should be in around 9am.
