Head to a stocked Qld dam for your next big catch

Recreational fishers in Queensland are encouraged to head to their nearest stocked dam for their next big catch.

Many of the state’s 33 Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) dams are still near full so fishers can expect to access some of the best impoundment fishing in Australia.

Fisheries Queensland’s SIPS coordinator Sheri Jackson said the dams were well known as some of the best places to fish for iconic freshwater species such as barramundi, Australian bass, golden perch and Murray cod.

'Tinaroo Dam in Far North Queensland and Lake Monduran near Gin Gin are home to some monster barra where fishers regularly land one metre catches,' she said.

'Buying a permit means you contribute to the cost of restocking theses dams and help to sustain native fish stocks.

'The local economy also benefits from visitors to the area.

'Most of these dams have great facilities where you can camp, buy bait or fishing gear and swap tips with the locals.

'Permits cost just $36.05 for one year or $32.40 for concession card holders.'

Fisheries Queensland is offering the chance to help SIPS fishers snag some top fishing gear, with two $250 fishing packs up for grabs.

Purchase a yearly Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) permit at a registered stockist or online between 1 November this year and 31 January 2012 to gain automatic entry into the competition.

Each prize pack contains four lures and a rod and reel combo.

Purchase and print your permit at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or search the online list to find a stockist near you.

The competition will be drawn late March, 2012.
