Having already received the ‘Sport Industry Environmental Concern in Sport Award,’ the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) is once again setting the example of best environmental practice. A ‘powerPerfector’ unit is to be installed at the Academy following their victory last weekend in a traditional boat race against the powerPerfector founder, Angus Robertson.

This green weapon is a voltage power optimisation unit which works by improving grid supplied power quality and adjusting voltage to optimum levels for equipment on site so it works more efficiently and wastes less energy.

The race took place on the waters of the River Alde, Suffolk using Loch Long One Design class 21 foot yachts. The Academy team, consisting of two boats helmed by Nic Asher, currently campaigning for 2012, and Keith Musto, Olympic silver medallist and Director of WPNSA, faced many challenges ahead of the race.

Nic and Keith overcame the local advantage of knowledge garnered from regular sailing at the venue and in this class of boat, narrowly beating the PowerPerfector team. Over the three race series, Nic Asher was second, Keith Musto fourth and Angus Robertson fifth in a fleet of sixteen boats.

Already a centre with energy efficiency as the foremost thought, the powerPerfector will assist in reducing overall electricity usage and enhance further the contribution made by solar power devices. The Academy has already worked successfully with Gold Sponsor Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) to produce 13-15% of its energy through photovoltaic cells which harness solar power.

In addition to exploring further use of photovoltaic cells with SSE, the Academy is now aiming to be the first 2012 venue to secure accreditation under B8901:2009 for sustainable events. With the new powerPerfector, the Academy is one step closer to achieving this goal; voltage power optimisation for all of powerPerfector’s clients saves them a daily rate of 642 tonnes of carbon dioxide and also reduces their energy spend by a remarkable £100,000 a day.

John Tweed, Chief Executive at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, commented, ‘It was certainly satisfying to the win the Challenge on the Alde, the WPNSA team definitely worked well together and we were able to clinch race victory. We also won our powerPerfector for the Academy adding to our commitment to environmental stewardship through energy efficiency’.
