Governor's Cup 2010 - Day four and down to the final four
|
Governor's Cup 2010 - Day Four - Day four of racing brought another beautiful day for sailing in Southern California with sunshine and good wind. Don Becker, PRO, and the race committee started the races at 1130 and were finished with the double round robin early. They continued with the beginning of the semi-finals and the pairings for the final standings. Some of the teams brought coaches with them, including Newport Harbor's Payson Infelise who coached both of their teams. Doing triple duty was Scott Dickson, who coached the teams from Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Royal Port Nicholson and Howth Yacht Club. The skipper from Howth, Ryan Scott, has been training in New Zealand, and has Daniel Pooley and Codie Banks as his crew. Both are from New Zealand as well. John Walden worked with his team from Mission Bay Yacht Club, as did Rob Bell from Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. Eduardo Ronnau and his wife accompanied the team from Argentina. Mike Pinckney has been working with the home team from Balboa Yacht Club. After racing the racers meet with the PRO and umpires for questions and discussion about events of the day. This gives them a chance to clarify decisions made and learn for future racing. Evenings include events that bring the racers together, helping them get to know each other. This year, the atmosphere has been warm and friendly from the beginning of the event with ball games on the flag deck every evening, and a lot of socializing. Choosing the Sportsmanship award this year will be difficult. The San Diego Yacht Club team of Nevin Snow, Max Hutcheson, and Jake Reynolds finished the round robins with two wins over the top two teams of NHYC, Segerstrom and RNZYS. That helped them get to fifth place in the standings, just out of the top four. The RNZYS team of William Tiller, Harry Thurston and Shaun Mason was the other team that prevailed over Segerstrom and his team from NHYC. They are the defending champions, having won the regatta in 2009. The standings for the teams after the double round robin are as follows: 1st Newport Harbor YC, Segerblom 2nd Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron 3rd Cruising Yacht Club of Australia 4th Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club (NZ) 5th San Diego Yacht Club 6th Mission Bay Yacht Club 7th Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (Aus) 8th Howth Yacht Club (Ireland) 9th Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Mason 10th Lake Beulah Yacht Club 11th Balboa Yacht Club 12th Club Nautico Mar Del Plata 13th Royal Yachting Association After the second round robin was completed, six matches were run to begin to determine the final outcome. In the first match, RNZYS Tiller against RPNYC Steven, Tiller won the start and went right with better boat speed. At the first crossing Tiller lee-bowed Steven, and remained in control. Tiller was ahead at the first mark by seventeen seconds, and continued ahead to win the match. The winner of two out of three between these two teams will proceed to the final. In the other semi-final match between NHYC Segerblom and CYCA Griffin, Griffin was a little ahead of Segerblom after the first windward mark. On the downwind leg, Segerblom rolled past Griffin, although Griffin was on the inside approaching the leeward mark and rounded the mark six seconds ahead of Segerblom. At the next weather mark, Griffin continued to lead Segerblom downwind. In an exciting finish, Segerblom passed Griffin downwind to win by six seconds. The final standings will be decided on Sunday, after a series of races, including another round robin for the three teams in 11, 12 and 13. An award ceremony will be held afternoon on the Flag Deck, with a variety of awards and trophies, presented by Rear Commodore Judi Gorski, Regatta Chair, and Andy Rose, long time supporter and former double winner of the Governor's Cup.
