Garmin Hamble Winter Series – Day 3
by Event media on 21 Oct 2008
The best of late season weather produced two superb days of racing in the Garmin Hamble Winter Series over the weekend 18/19 October. A light to moderate south-westerly breeze on Saturday built up to 22 knots on Sunday and was enough to produce some high speed sailing and the occasional spectacular broach. Lewmar was the day sponsor.
In the concluding races of the Hamble Big Boat Series very tight competition in the Level Racing Class (eight Farr 45's) saw Jerry Otter's Werewolf take the trophy from Rebel and Fortis Excel, while in the IRC Big Boat Class Robert Lutener & Martin Elwood's TP52 Cutting Edge dominated proceedings ahead of the J-133's of Neil Martin and Stuart Hawthorn.
The new Super-Sport class for larger SBR rated sportsboats attracted three entries, but only Gavin Maber's new Mark Mills md35 showed up to race. Undeterred the boat raced with IRC Zero, and Maber was enthusiastic about the racing, promising to return next year.
In the main Garmin Hamble Winter Series on Sunday competitors enjoyed excellent racing as the wind built throughout the day. Two races were held for each of the seven classes within the Black fleet and three boats recorded double wins, Shiva (Matthew Boyle) in the 21 strong J109 fleet, Festina Lente (Meakins family) in IRC 3 and Whippa Snappa (Richard Puddifoot) in IRC4.
Batfish III (Bill Blain) won their third consecutive race in IRC0 during the morning but slipped to fourth in the second race of the day allowing Panacea (John Patterson) to record their first victory of the series.
Over on the White fleet course area all classes completed their scheduled three races. Boats.com (Ian Atkins) took two wins out of three, along with an OCS, in the J80 class but the series lead is retained by Joystick (Vic Gregory and Rob Larke) who scored a consistent 2, 1, 2. Selden Masts (Chris Jennings) had a great day in the 38 strong SB3 class recording wins in the last two races of the day to add to a fifth in race one. Betty (Jon Powell) continued with their imperious form in the Hunter 707s winning all three of the day’s races.
The final set of racing for the SB3 class Hamble Autumn Championships is scheduled over next weekend, the 25-26 October. The SB3s will be joined on both days by the Sigma 38, Sigma 33, J109, J105, J80, Beneteau 31.7, Hunter 707, and Quarter Tonner classes, each class having five scheduled races over the weekend for their Autumn Championships. The main Garmin Hamble Winter Series continues on the Sunday.
