Gale blows out today’s racing in Prince Philip Cup

Galeforce winds peaking at 65 knots on Hobart’s Derwent River prevented any racing today in the Prince Philip Cup, the Australian championship for International Dragon class yachts.

The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania race officials held all boats ashore as hot northerlies churned up the river, averaging 40 knots on the mid-river course area but blasting in at 65 knots further downstream

Race five has been postponed until tomorrow, with a scheduled start of 11am, to be followed by race six as a back-to-back race.

The scheduled start of race seven on Sunday has also been brought forward to 11am.

After four heats, Riga, sailed by Ian McCrossin, Martin Burke and Rick Hall from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, heads the overall pointscore on 23.4 points from the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s Kirribilli II, sailed by Andrew Crisp, David Graney and John Gardiner, on 24.7 points.

Third overall on 26 points is Whim, helmed by Gordon Ingate from the RSYS, with Tasmanians Nick Rogers and Simon Burrows from the RYCT as his crew.

The jury has dismissed a protest against the race committee by one of the three yachts that were called OCS in Wednesday’s heat four and placings stand for that race.

In fourth place is Hotspur (Ken Stevenson, WA) on 42.7 points, followed by Aquila (Jock Young, Tas) on 44.7 and Mystere (Wayne Wagg, Tas) also on 44.7 points.
