A great turnout for the two day Wairoa regatta with race officer Tim Sandal keeping track of the fifty boats that turned out from Ohope, Gisborne, Napier and the host club Wairoa.
Over half the fleet were juniors sailing Optis, P Class, Firebugs and Starlings, with a rainbow Opti fleet well looked after by Peter Miller and the Firebugs ably assisted by the new YNZ service award winner Rod McCulloch. A windy Saturday saw only two races completed, while Sundays conditions were lighter to allow three races to be sailed.
Well done to the Wairoa Yacht Club for their hospitality during the weekend with the usual superb BBQ and social evening at the club. This was the biggest regatta for years in Wairoa and having the support of the other east coast clubs has been crucial to the growing numbers.
We now look forward to the Ohope regatta in February and the Gisborne regatta in March.
