Day 2 two of the Finn World Championships showed the other more gentle side of San Francisco Bay. With relatively tame water conditions, and winds staying below 20 knots all day, sailors were tested on boat speed and tactics in contrast to their Greco Roman wrestling skills.
With fog lapping at the Golden Gate, and sunshine bathing the race course, race one got off in a light 4-6 not breeze that putting in to play the kinetics rule limiting downwind pumping. The rule limits the sailors from pumping and/or rocking and rolling their boats to generate speed in the interest of keeping this a sailing match and not a physical fitness contest. After yesterday's wrestling match most of the fleet probably welcomed the rest.
As the fleet launched themselves off the line it was Ed Wright (GBR 11) of Great Britain getting a great start and taking with him the Slovak Republics Gasper Vincec (SLO 5) and Frenchmen Thomas le Bretton (FRA 115). Poland's Piotr Kula (POL 17) was having his best race of the regatta by far showing he preferred the more civil conditions of the day. Once again the juniors were impressing and this time Greece's Ioannis Mitakis was putting up another solid race effort that saw him in the top 10 as the fleet went around the course the first time. Mitakis had been in third place after race one on day one slipping to a 21st place finish and this time he was determined to hold on. This is a stacked fleet however and that's a tall order.
Wright however was the one to watch and is no stranger to these waters having won the 2010 North American Championships on these very waters just last month(July 16-18). Wright in fact won every single race of that regatta foreshadowing his performance today. Wright took the race one win with Vincec in Second and Thomas le Bretton coming third. Kula sailed well through the whole race to secure a fourth place finish 24 points higher than either of his scores the day prior. Junior Mitakis put in an effort to be proud of and finished up in 13th place.
The wind had continued to build through-out race one and as race two kicked off the wind was now a solid 12-14 knots gusting to 18 knots with the sea state increasing right along with it. Wright was again quick of the line but this time it was teammate Mark Andrew (GBR 88) going with him. Zach Railey who placed seventh in race one was now pushing further forward in the fleet and le Bretton was once again also a threat at the top. le Bretton's French team mate Jonathan Lobert (FRA 112) was having his best performance of the regatta and found himself sailing with the top 10.
This race saw the top 6 really begin to emerge and sail as fleet within a fleet. Day one leader Rafael Trujillo got buried in race one but was once again sailing towards the top of the fleet. Ed Wright bookended his race one win with another bullet with fellow Brit Mark Andrew taking second and Frances Thomas le Bretton coming third. The ever consistent Railey came in fourth for his best showing so far.
le Bretton's 3-3 scoring line on the day was good enough to put him in the overall lead. American Zach Railey is in second but only by virtue of losing the tiebreaker to le Bretton with the two sailors locked at 21 points apiece. Ed Wright is in third place overall and his 18-1-1-3 scoring line over the two days of racing will have him dreaming about the discard tonight. As we said yesterday however consistency is going to be the key and with none of those discards in play yet the leader board now may shake up dramatically once they come in to play. Spain's Trujillo also looks to move up should he sail well tomorrow and can chuck his race 3 35th place finish.
Two more races are scheduled for tomorrow Wednesday September 1st on the Olympic Circle in San Francisco Bay and the regatta runs through September 4th. Lighter warmer winds are forecast for tomorrow as the SF Bay falls under the spell of a high pressure system.
