Finalists at Skandia Sail for Gold medal races

Paul Goodison ponders his next move at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta onEdition © http://www.onEdition.com

Friday was the end of the general fleet racing at the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy on the South coast of England. Just one race for some on Friday for the eight Olympic classes racing in the event - the Tornado, Yngling and Star classes are resting.

A number of the 2008 Olympic squad are racing, but after a hectic year that has seen Skandia TeamGBR bring home a record medal haul, some sense of going thru the motions can be forgiven.

In the 49er Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes have taken the lead at just the right time. Their third today in a race won by Erik Heil and Thomas Plobel from Germany, displaced overnight leaders, John Pink and Rick Peacock who drop to third after finishing a distant 20th.

Giles Scott in the Finn event, took his sixth win today and has the series won. In second place is Ed Wright, who did not start today.

In the Laser, Olympian Paul Goodison is down in 33rd after not racing today. His series also includes an OCS, a DSQ and a BFD as well as a couple of wins. Out in front Nick Thompson has it all under control, 19 points ahead of Mark Powell, who is 18 points ahead of third placed Avid Claeson from Sweden in the 57 boat fleet.

In the Radial version, China’s Olympic sailing hero Lijia Xu, continues to power ahead with another two wins, this time ahead of Charlotte Dobson, with Andra Brewster third in both races.

Nic Asher and Elliot Willis finished second today in the 470, behind the French pair Alex Rossignol and David Boudgourd. In fact only eight of the 22 starters managed to avoid being black flagged in this race.

In the Women's 470, the Chinese pair, Xiaoli Wang and Xufeng Huang scored their first win of the week, beating the overall leaders Berta Betanzos and Tara Pacheco from Spain into second. Britain's Hannah Mills and Katrina Hughes were black flagged but retain second place overall.

Another run-away leader is Shahar Zubari from Israel in the RS:X 9.5. He had to give way to China's Aichen Wang who took the gun today but Zubari has a 14 point lead over Nick Dempsey going into Saturday's Medal race.

And finally the Women's RS:X 8.5. Ali Masters is tied in the lead with Bryony Shaw, who won today, and they are just one point ahead of Manchon Blanca of Spain. Setting up one of the best final Medal races.

The Medal races take place from 10:30hrs Saturday, starting with the Finn and Women's 470 events. The top ten finalists will sail in the Medal races on Saturday in Weymouth Harbour, courses will be windward/leeward only. First off at 10:30 hrs will be the Finn and the Women's 470.
