Final leg of Baltic Sprint Cup underway

'Close start - Baltic Sprint Cup'    Nico Krauss
This is it! The final leg to Bornholm is now under way in the Baltic Sprint Cup.

After an overnight stop in Gdansk, and a mid-morning Sea Parade through the channel, the fifth - and final – leg of the Baltic Sprint Cup 2008 is now under way after a delayed start owing to a lack of wind at the intended start line. Nonetheless, after moving the start line further out, shortly after 13.00 today the race got underway with the help of gentle sea breeze. The final leg sees the yachts making their way to the holiday island of Bornholm in Denmark.

With the crews knowing this was there last chance to claim a spot on the podium in 2008, and a chance of the winds dropping down to almost nothing in the evening and early hours of the morning, the race has the potential to be one of the longer ones. Tactics could play a significant role as the crews work hard to maximize the wind conditions.

In any event, what is certain is that everything will be settled when the Bank DnB NORD Final Showdown Party takes place in Rønne.

Bank DnB NORD Offshore Regtta Day: Exciting Round-the-Buoys racing in the Gulf of Gdansk.

It was a day of colourful spinnakers and gennakers and exciting racing yesterday in the Gulf of Gdansk during the 4th leg of this years regatta. It may be the fourth annual Baltic Sprint Cup, but it was the first ever edition of the Bank DnB NORD Offshore Regatta Days.

The boats pulled into historic Gdansk after a day under the hot sun that saw the yachts complete two full round-the-buoy races in the Gulf – each worth a full leg victory. Not a bad deal for a couple hours of work. It was also a chance for the crews to demonstrate their sailing skills in a short race format.

In the end, several yachts made it to the podium who had not been there before in the Baltic Sprint Cup 2008. And there is no doubt that it did bring a new dimension to this year’s regatta.
