Final day of Travemuende Week
|
The turquoise waters had a temperature of 20 degrees, and the waves flashed stylish white caps. The sailors enjoyed dream-like conditions on the last day of the 119th Travemuende Week on Sunday. More than 250 races in 29 classes had been sailed and ten more winners were crowned. Helge und Christian Sach from Zarnekau, Germany added their 15th victory in Travemuende to their career by winning the Formula 18 competition. The Europa Cup of the 505 class saw Jens Fiedel and Johannes Tellen from Kiel, Germany winning gold. 'It was the best Travemuende week in years', said the Sach brothers unanimously during the prize-giving ceremony in the Volkswagen Sailors Village, 'it is hard to find conditions like these.' After a stormy start and a day that began virtually with no wind, the weather developed during the week to allow great sailing. The winners of the F18 class had prematurely taken the title of International German Tornado Champions, and did not even did not have to start on the last day. They did, however, and added a last bullet to their winning streak. Jens Findel and Johannes Tellen fulfilled their role as favourites and enlarged their lead in the 505 Euro Cup. 'We are happy with our performance and loved the excellent wind conditions', said Findel. 'With these pictures in mind, we would like to motivate many crews to take part in the International German Championship that shall take place at Travemuende Week next year. 'We might have as many as 60 boats at the start', he added. The biggest class in this year’s Travemuende Week were the traditional Folk boats with 58 participants. And 56 offshore yachts took raced the first leg of the Baltic Sprint Cup from Travemuende to Karlskrona, Sweden. The Olympic 49er class sailed on course Beach in front of many spectators. Tobias Schadewaldt and Hannes Baumann from Hamburg sprinted up the podium with two bullets on the last day, finishing close behind the Danish team Martin Due and Peter Keller. It was a clear victory for Erik Heil and Thomas Ploessl from Berlin. The Finn Dinghy class had also been decided the day before, with European Junior Champion Jan Kurfeld from Wismar, Germany dominating the class. The battle for 'silver' was won by the Masters World Champion Andre Budzien, who let Thomas Reger from Kiel take place three. The final day of the Javelin Euro Cup turned out to be a Anglo-German affair. The British team Brian and David Earl had been far in front and took first. But the duo Thomas Broeker and Volkmar Prehn from Germany was able to snatch the second place from the British crew Richard and Kathryn Smith. The 120th Travemuende Week will be marked by the sailing youngsters, because the German championship of all youth and junior classes will take place in Travemuende immediately afterwards. 'We expect about 1,300 participants with 800 boats in the second half of the next Travemuende Week', said Karin Boege and Claus Dieter Stolze, the organizing head of 340 volunteers who will be carrying out the 120th Travemuende Week that will take place from 17 to 26 July 2009.
