Final Round of the Manly Junior NSW State Championship 2009-2010

Hosted by the Manly Junior Sailing Association of NSW and held at the magnificent NSW Sport andRecreation camp at Point Wolstoncroft on Lake Macquarie, last weekend the third and final round of the Manly Junior 2009-2010 State Championship was completed.

It resulting in victory going to Nicholas Connor and Fergus Stabback (MH16'SSC) sailing 2770 'Wet ‘n' Wild.'

Nick was able to add the State Championship silverware to the trophy cabinet having already captured the 2009-2010 National title earlier in the season.

Second overall went to Ryan Wilmot and Simon Murnaghan (M16'SSC) in 2780,'2780' and third, by only one point, to Ira Dubery and Tristan Bongolan (M16'SSC) sailing 2774 'Cool Beans'.

Winner of the overall Handicap trophy was Daniel Hayworth and Bailey Hughes (M16'SSC) in 2772'MWD'

First overall in the Junior Division (Under 12 years) went to Sean Connor with his crew Flynn Twomeysailing 2748 'Crazy n Wild' for MH16's.

The 'All Girl' trophy was awarded to Tiarne Hayes and her crew, Sarah Glenndenning, sailing 2723'With Attitude' from HPCYC.

Overall Novice Handicap winner (First year skippers) was awarded to Niall Powers and James Croker(M16'SSC) in 2712 'Totally Airborne'.

Nick's victory in the Championship was the result of consistent sailing in the earlier rounds which meant going into Race 9 his lead was unassailable.

Ryan and Ira had a tough battle throughout the series with Ryan finally coming out on top in the very last race of the regatta with his first race win of the series.

In what has become a tradition for the MJs, last weekend saw 300 parents and kids descend on what must be one of the most picturesque sailing locations in New South Wales.

Following rounds last year at Belmont 16s and Manly 16s the season finale at Point Wolstoncroft is always a fitting climax with it's relaxed atmosphere and perfect sailing area immediately off the manicured lawns of the Camp.

In addition, the weekend includes a Rookie division in the fleet specifically aimed at children who have never before sailed or been on the start line of a race.

In total, 75 dinghies attended the final round with 20 of these forming the Rookie division. The Rookies have the opportunity to compete on the same course as the more experienced kids and experience just what it's like under racing conditions.

Conditions at Point Wolstoncroft over the weekend varied from light to variable to a terrific 18-20 knots on Saturday afternoon which demonstrated to the large spectator fleet just how fast Australia's only three sailed training dinghy can go when up on the plane going down a perfectly laid reaching leg.
