Carl Evans and Peter Burling have missed a spot in the 470 World Championships top ten by the narrowest of margins.

A 5th and a 4th place in racing yesterday in Melbourne put them just one point adrift of 10th place at the end of the penultimate day of the regatta.

Today in Melbourne the top ten will sail the medal race to decide the podium places and the remainder of the gold fleet will sail a thirteenth race to determine their final placings.

The 470 fleet enjoyed exciting racing in windy conditions in Melbourne yesterday and the young kiwis returned their best results since gold fleet racing started. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough to lift them up into the top ten and into the medal race line-up.

Evans and Burling will start today in 11th place with a solid 14-point margin over 12th place. Meanwhile kiwi team-mates Geoff Woolley and Mark Overington are not far behind in 14th place overall.

The two kiwi pairs will sail one race today scheduled to start at midday in Melbourne.
