Etchells Nationals 2011 - Audi, the prestige automotive company, has been firmly associated with sailing in Australian in recent years.

Geelong stages Audi Victoria Week each January, Audi sponsored the 2006 Audi Etchells World Championship in Fremantle in 2006 and again in Melbourne in 2009.

This week Royal Geelong Yacht Club General Manager Phil Clohesy announced a new event sponsorship.

'We are delighted that the very substantial Geelong based Rex Gorell Group, through their Audi dealership, has formed a partnership with the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, which consolidates our connection to Audi Victoria Week and brings the prestigious Rex Gorell Presitge Australian Etchells Championships to the Geelong waterfront.'

The Rex Gorell Group is the largest regional multifranchise automotive dealership with over 300 staff. Founded by Rex, son Brett is the Dealer Principal and he along with brothers Paul and Jason run the business.

Brett Gorell commented today 'Our family has been in Geelong since the late 1800's, so the family is pretty passionate about Geelong. Anything that is good for Geelong, such as the Etchells titles, is great.

'Sailing is a strong part of Geelong's history and Audi Victoria Week is probably the largest sailing event in the southern states.

'We are pleased Audi is such a strong supporter of sailing. It is good for us because these big events are so great for Geelong itself. It brings so many people to the place. We are not only passionate about Audi and the brands we sell, we are passionate about Geelong itself.'

Rear Commodore Brian Case, from the Royal Geelong Yacht Club says the 2011 Rex Gorell Prestige Etchells Australian Championships will draw a strong fleet.

'Corio Bay is recognised as an excellent sailing location and Royal Geelong Yacht Club has good regatta organisational experience. We will have entries from New Zealand, Asia, Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales as well as from Victoria and we are expecting around 65 boats overall.

'Because of the strong interest in the event we are running a Pre-Nationals Event on December 18 and 19th with three short races on Saturday and four on Sunday. We have a 25 visiting boats limit for this event.'
