A brilliant turnout of 24 Enterprises competed in the 2010 Nobile Marine Enterprise Youth Nationals held at Barnt Green Sailing Club which has become the ‘Home for the U21s’. The course set consisted of a beat across the lake and a run back, a second beat and a broad reach down the lake, with the last leg being a run back to the start. Race 1 The first race started in a force 2-3 easterly wind with Calum and Rory Mackenzie of Ogston SC, starting from the middle of the line, making the best start. It was Harry Hill and Richard Abendstern of High Peak SC, however, who rounded the windward mark first with Calum and Rory second and Lewis Kneale and Anna Hampson of Chester SC. third. Chris Winters and Alex Homer of Midland SC. were fourth. Calum and Rory overtook Harry and Richard downwind to take the lead. After a good downwind leg Tom Hewitt and Hannah Adams of WLYC passed Chris and Alex to take third. Over the next two laps Calum and Rory built up a substantial lead until the final downwind leg when they hit the mark and did their penalty turn, but still won the race. Tom and Hannah were second with Harry and Richard third. Nicholas Copsey and Jamie Camman of Ely SC. had meanwhile gained fourth. Race 2 The second race was sailed on the same course. At the start several boats were over the line and had to return. Calum and Rory started at the pin end and led at the first mark, second was Nicolas and Jamie followed by Jack Lawson and Greg Little of Bassenthwaite SC, despite having to return to the start. Fourth were Tom and Hannah and fifth Sam Woods and Richard Hayton of Etherow SC, who had also been over the line and returned. Close racing took place again, with many exciting battles taking place throughout the fleet. Chris and Alex passed six boats at the gybe mark to move from twelfth to sixth place. Calum and Rory continued to build their lead whilst behind , Nicolas and Jamie luffed Jack and Greg, allowing Tom and Hannah to catch up to gain fourth. Chris and Alex were fifth with the other under-fifteen boat, Harry and Richard, close behind. At the next windward mark, Tom and Hannah moved up to second whilst Jack and Greg hit the mark and did their penalty turn. Excellent sailing by Chris and Alex downwind saw them overtake Jack and Greg to gain fourth behind third place Nicholas and Jamie. By the end of the race, Calum and Rory had again built a substantial lead whilst Alan Roberts and Rob Lea of RNSA sailed an excellent final beat to gain two places to fourth place. Tom and Hannah sailed steadily to cross the line second. Nicholas and Jamie were third. So, Alan Roberts and Rob Lea ended fourth, Rory Jones and Rachel Lennox of Barnt Green SC were fifth. Race 3 This race was sailed in the lightest conditions of the day. Tom and Hannah made the best start, Jack and Gregg collided which resulted in them doing a 720 before they started. At the first mark Harry and Richard rounded first from Sam and Richard. Chris and Alex were third with Tom and Hannah fourth. On the reach there was some close racing with Tom and Hannah gybing and pulling ahead of Chris and Alex who managed to sneak an inside overlap and round the leeward mark third. On the next beat Chris and Alex went hard left to gain second place behind Harry and Richard, the two under fifteen boats showing their elders the way. On the run Tom and Hannah passed Sam and Richard to gain third. The places remained the same on the next reach. On the following beat Chris and Alex and Tom and Hannah battled well with Chris and Alex rounding the windward mark second, however Tom and Hannah pulled past on the run to close up on Harry and Richard, who maintained a small lead. The next beat remained the same, despite some excellent tactical sailing from all competitors. On the reach Tom and Hannah claimed inside water on Harry and Richard at the leeward mark. On the next beat Chris and Alex had learned enough to catch up Tom and Hannah and also Harry and Richard with all three boats rounding the windward mark almost together. Meanwhile a big gybing battle between Calum and Rory, Allan and Rob and Sam and Richard kicked off as the urgency of catching the leaders increased with Sam and Richard doing a 720 after close quarters combat. Calum and Rory came out of this in fourth place. At the finish Tom and Hannah were first, Harry and Richard were second, Chris and Alex were third, Calum and Rory fourth and Allan and Robert fifth. Race 4 This race started early Sunday morning in a stronger wind with rain. At the first mark Calum and Rory led from Allan and Rob with the rest of the fleet very close behind. On the following broad reach Allan and Rob bore away and sailed underneath everyone to take the lead whilst the rest of the fleet bunched up and almost came to a standstill. A melee at the leeward mark saw many place changes. Allan and Rob led up the next beat with Sam and Richard going left to pull up to second place. The start of the second lap saw Alan and Rob first, Sam and Richard second, Scott Bilham and Jack Camman third with Rory and Rachel fourth. Alan and Rob continued to build their lead on this lap with Sam and Richard second with third place being hotly contested. Alan and Rob built even more lead on the third lap with Sam and Richard second. Tom and Hannah, Rory and Rachel and Harry and Richard battling for third place behind. At the finish Sam and Richard were first, Alan and Rob second, Tom and Hannah third, Rory and Rachel fourth and Harry and Richard fifth. Race 5 In this race the rain stopped, the sun came out and the wind got stronger and was gusty. The outcome of this race would decide the Enterprise Youth Champions. Calum and Rory made a good start to lead at the windward mark with Jack and Greg and Rory and Rachel close behind. The following broad reach saw the end of the fleet catch up and the melee at the leeward mark saw many place changes as in the previous race. Jack and Gregg passed Calum and Rory on the next beat but Calum and Rory passed them to leeward on the following reach. Harry and Richard were third with Tom and Hannah very close behind and Rory and Rachel gaining fast. On the third lap Calum and Rory led around the windward mark. The following reach saw Jack and Greg gybe onto starboard into more wind and looked to be passing everyone but it was not to be. Tom and Hannah rounded the leeward mark second behind Calum and Rory with Jack and Gregg third. Behind this, many close battles and some superb close racing took place. Tom and Hannah overtook Calum and Rory on the next beat to snatch the lead at the beginning of the fourth lap with Alan and Rob third and Harry and Richard fourth. At the start of the fifth and final lap Tom and Hannah led from Calum and Rory and Alan and Rob. Tom and Hannah extended the lead with Calum and Rory second with Alan and Rob close behind in third place. The race finished in this order. Tom and Hannah won this race and the championship. The event was concluded with a Prize Giving where Enterprise Commodore Paul Young, Barnt Green Commodore Gordon Padmore and the Champion Tom Hewitt all expressed thanks for what was a great event at Barnt Green SC. The organisation was first class both on the water and the social/catering/bar aspect. Thanks was also given to Bob and Paula Southworth, The Enterprise Association and the many Parents, Supporters and especially the Boat Owners, who gave their boats so willingly to the young competitors in this event. There was as much sailing on shore as there was on the water!!! One word sums up this event – BRILLIANT – a big THANK YOU to everyone involved – without your support it would not be this good. Look forward to seeing you all again next year 3 - 4 September 2011 at Barnt Green (the date has already been booked). http://www.sailenterprise.org.uk
